What Should We Wear?

When I schedule a family portrait session, the next question I am usually get asked is "What should we wear?"! I have come up with SIX tips that will help guide you to your fashionista success for picture day!

Tip #1: Choose a Color Palette! Go with the season & go with your vision! Pick 3-4 colors that look good together & start from there. The color palette above shows a you just a few color choices. Remember the colors you choose should also take into consideration your own personal style as well as the location and season of your portrait session. Patterns/prints in these color schemes are great too, with a mix of some wearing solids!

Tip #2: It's ok to NOT match! Differing outfit choices, styles, etc.. all with the same color palette is a MUCH better way to keep everyone happy & expressing themselves, while keeping the photos consistent & interesting. The days of same shirts and jeans are so out dated in my mind! Allow your kids to express their personality with their outfit (while staying consistent in the theme) also making it a fun experience!

Tip #3: Prints can be overwhelming. One person in a print dress or shirt that coordinates with everyone else is fine, but when you 2, 3 or 4 people in different prints with look chaotic and unorganized. There is definitely such a thing as TOO MUCH when it comes to prints. I like to use the KISS method (Keep it simple sweetie).

Tip #4: Accessorize! Necklaces, hats, bracelets, belts, etc… all can add a pop of color & interest without taking away from the people in the photos as well as the overall consistency of the images. They help you express your own personal style. But please remember to remove the neon pink hairband from your wrist!

Tip #5: Don’t be afraid of pops of color! Some people shy away from reds or coral or yellows….They bring such excitement & fun to your photos!! Be bold! There are colored jeans, jackets, necklaces, everything to help you bring some color to your portraits & keep them fun! You can always take some photos with the pop and some without! Easier to remove a necklace than a top in the middle of an open field!

Tip # 6: Have fun! No need to worry about whether or not your children or your hubby are smiling…that’s my job! The more relaxed you are the more relaxed your children are & it will show in your photos! Giggle and have fun with your family, candid photographs of your session will be a memory of how everyone felt during the shoot.

I hope this helps bring some vision of your outfit choice to mind! If you are looking for more inspiration you can take a look through the blog at what other Mandy Lorraine Photography families have chosen to wear or take your pretty self over to Pintrest for millions of ideas!
